Q&A: Which WordPress Plugins Will Allow You To Embed Videos From Sites Other Than YouTube?

I received a question on Twitter from @JOCCITY414 -

“Which plugins will allow you to embed videos from sites other than YouTube?”

Since 140 characters isn’t really enough for a detailed answer, I thought it’d be a great opportunity to use Best Plugins For WP to give a more detailed answer that others might find useful too. :)

After doing some research I’ve found 2 cool plugins that will do just the job.

1. WordPress Video Plugin

What stands out to me about this plugin is just the amount of video sites that it supports, currently WordPress Video Plugin supports an amazing 65 different video sites.

There are various other plugins that I came across that were similar, but most didn’t support anywhere near the amount of sites that WordPress Video Plugin does.

Embedding the videos is easy with the short code provided.

2. Viper’s Video Quicktags

At first glance, this plugin doesn’t support nowhere the same amount of video sites that WordPress Video Plugin does, but don’t let that put you off, because Viper’s Video Quicktags has some tricks up its sleeve.

The main thing is though that it does support major sites like YouTube, DailyMotion, Vimeo, Metacafe, Viddler, Veoh, Blip.tv etc – so the big sites are covered which is good to see.

If you’re looking to embed videos from other sites then that’s cool, Viper’s Video Quicktags has got you covered with support for Flash Video Files (FLV), QuickTime (MOV) and various other files such as AVI, MPEG & WMV etc.

There is a handy quick short code as well for embedding videos from ANY website, just use the [flash] short code.

What makes this plugin even better is that it integrates really well into the TinyMCE editor and makes customising the size and style of the videos that you’re embedding.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a more straight forward plugin with fewer bells and whistles, but support for a wide range of video sites, then WordPress Video Plugin is the way to go.

However, on the other hand if you’re looking for more functionality, more options for customisation and the ability to embed almost any file type then I’d go with Viper’s Video Quicktags.

Have you had any experience with either of the plugins above or used any other plugins that work well for embedding video? Let us know in the comments below.

The WordPress Video Plugin works with almost every video website use online, so for me this is the winner.

Hey Shane, thanks for dropping by – I was pretty shocked to see how many sites WordPress Video Plugin supports, it’s difficult to find a solution that supports that many! Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated :)

    Hey!

You can embed by pressing the HTML button and just paste the embed code in there; and can be used as tags!

Hey Job, thanks for your comment - definitely the most light weight option, it’s always best to be able to reduce the amount of plugins you use where possible.
